Christmas Gifts - Shop Local and Buy Local

Hand-made Christmas Card - Jo McIntosh - Knit One Weave One
St Ives Crafts -Shop Local - Buy Local

If you're looking for Christmas gifts in St Ives you have lots of choices and a great range of local shops.

But - its worth bearing in mind that something labelled as A Gift From St Ives or Cornwall may not be all that it seems.

Many of these gifts may be from further afield - often much further !

It's great to support local businesses - where possible - by shopping in town. But you can increase the benefits even further by buying goods that are also made locally. Or - as a good alternative - Fairtrade items that will benefit craft makers elsewhere.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with cheap foreign made tat manufactured gifts from around the world. They generally offer good value and quality. But if you want some of the lovely work made by local Cornish craftspeople - or genuine Fairtrade goods - you need to take a little care. If in doubt - always ask in the shop or check the label carefully.

Shop Local AND Buy Local.

Here are some "local hero" shops - on the ground in St Ives and online - where you can be sure to get genuine Cornish or Fairtrade gifts.

Miracle Theatre - St Ives

Miracle Theatre - The Importance Of Being Earnest

The wonderful Miracle Theatre are back in St Ives tomorrow with their latest production - The Importance Of Being Earnest.

Miracle are regular visitors to St Ives and have built up a fine reputation - if you haven't seen them before don't miss this !

An outdoor performance in the beautiful setting of Tregenna Castle - right outside the hotel on the front lawn.   Food and drink will be available in the hotel before, during and after the show.

Oscar Wilde’s ‘trivial comedy for serious people’ is a masterpiece of sharp wit and preposterous plotting. Such ‘beautiful nonsense’ cries out for the sort of surreal treatment that has become Miracle’s hallmark.

Set in the year 1912, with the Titanic sinking, mass production just beginning on the Morris Oxford and the Turkey Trot causing outrage across the dance floors of polite society, this tale of the strange contents of a handbag found at Victoria station has been subtly adapted to extract every drip of humour and contemporary relevance.

In this high energy production Miracle adds an extra dimension to ‘the funniest play ever written’.

Tickets are available on the gate or in advance from Hall For Cornwall Box Office:

St Ives Community Play - Make and Create

St Ives Community Play - Make and Create for Children

This year’s St Ives Community Play is The Merry Wives of Windsor. Rough Coast Community Arts is producing the play and they are looking for fairies and little devils for the closing scene.

In preparation, they’ll be hosting a ‘Make and Create’ afternoon and inviting children aged 5 to 11 to participate on  Sunday 6th May, from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm.

The afternoon will be run by artists from the local area. Children will leave with an item of costume that they create in the workshop – a scary little devil mask or a pair of fairy wings.

Local children’s author Liz Kessler will also be at the workshop to present a child friendly version of the story she has written, leaving out Shakespeare’s bawdy bits!

Attending the workshop doesn’t mean that children have to be in the play, but the Rough Coast team hope they will want to get involved and make good use of their costumes!

The Merry Wives of Windsor is an outdoor production that will play on The Island St Ives in August and September 2012.  Director Sarah Lincoln said: “Children won’t need to commit to all of the eight shows, but we hope they’ll have so much fun they’ll want to take part in a few!

So if parents have any little devils or fairies in their household who’d like to join in please contact Rough Coast on 07861 718 652.

Or just turn up to the Make and Create session at the Island Centre. Rough Coast is asking for a £2.00 donation per child just to cover the cost of materials.

Exhibition - Mother & Son - Sally & Sam MacCabe

Sam and Sally MacCabe

An interesting new exhibition - Mother & Son - opens on Sunday (1st April 2012) - at The Crypt Gallery St Ives

For the first time, Sally and Sam MacCabe are holding a joint exhibition of their work which they say has been a challenging, but exciting collaboration.

Sally MacCabe has become well established in St Ives as a mixed media artist who is known for her use of a subtle blue, grey and neutral palette of colours. Her textured paintings often feature applied papers and ephemera.  These range from large canvases with a grid formation of design, to small six inch studies worked with acrylics on board. Her work extends across various media and she also produces papier-mâché vessels and sculptures, delightful art dolls, individual artist’s books and intriguingly detailed wall hangings.

This is the first time that Sam MacCabe has shown is work. He has produced a body of paintings that are loosely based on the theme of ‘identity’ and so feature striking portraits that are both engaging and disturbing.  He uses two quite separate techniques: large, bold and colourful canvases that are spray-painted and stencilled in a very contemporary ‘street art’ style; and small black and white pieces that are intensely detailed and worked with a fine black pen on canvas.

The exhibition runs from Sunday 1st April until Friday 6th April - 10.00 am to 5.00 pm daily - admission is free.

You can view all the work online at:

For further information please telephone Sally on 07885 079 902.
