Theatre - St Ives - On Air

On Air - A Celebration Of Vintage Radio Entertainment
On Air - BoatHouse Theatre St Ives

A new theatre production - performed by a local cast - is coming to St Ives in May.

On Air - A Celebration Of Vintage Radio Entertainment.

Tuesday 17th - Thursday 19th May 2016 - 7.00 pm.

BoatHouse Theatre, Carnglaze Place, St Ives, Cornwall, TR26 1PX

A celebration of radio drama - including the first ever play written for and aired on radio - in 1924 - set in a coal mine -
A Comedy Of Danger - a one act play by Richard Hughes.

'To my mind, one of the best plays ever broadcast. Here was something that was written for wireless only; the scene was in a coal mine, and was meant to be heard and not seen. If this play had been produced in a legitimate theatre the stage would have been in total darkness; the players and the action would remain unseen. It was, therefore, ideal for broadcasting, and probably not so good for use in a theatre. In fact, I think it gained by being broadcast, as a sense of distance for such a setting was an inducement to the right atmosphere.'
Nigel Playfair - 'Popular Wireless' - 9 March 1929.

Also - The Understudy - a play by Patricia Calder.

Tickets: £7.00
From - Boathouse Theatre -  07985 261 181
Also on the door if available.

Colin Birchall - 1948-2014 - Final Work

This July sees the first large scale exhibition of the work of St Ives artist Colin Birchall since his death in 2014.

The exhibition, has been curated by Colin’s family and includes a large selection of Colin’s work - including pieces from his gallery in St Ives (which closed directly after his death) and previously unseen work from his personal collection.

Like many in St Ives I had the pleasure of knowing Colin - we worked together on his website - and I enjoyed our chats at Harbour Galleries, Cafe Art and St Ives Arts Club.

He is missed - and this may be the last chance to see his work exhibited in St Ives.

Sunday 24th July – Friday 29th July 2016
The Crypt Gallery, Norway Square, St Ives
Open daily - 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.

St Ives Neighbourhood Plan - Open Forum

St Ives Cornwall - Neighbourhood Plan
St Ives Cornwall - Neighbourhood Plan

St Ives Neighbourhood Plan  sets out proposals for development in and around St Ives for the next 15 years.

A Neighbourhood Plan sets out the community’s views on the development and use of land. This includes setting policies on where development should go, how development is designed and where to give permission for certain types of development.

There will be a referendum on Thursday 5th May 2016 - where all local residents will be able to vote - simply yes to accept or no to reject.

The plan has generated a lot of comment - in the press, on social media and around town.

St Ives Town Council will be hosting an Open Forum to give residents the chance to hear more, have their say and to help them to make an informed choice when they vote.

Tuesday 3rd May 2016 at 7.00 pm.
St Ives Guildhall.
More info:
St Ives Town Council - Website

I'm planning to go along and would urge others to do so.

Most discussion so far has focussed on just one small part of the document - the section that proposes restrictions on new development for second homes in the area. There is a lot more in there - the plan covers a whole host of local issues including:
  • Culture
  • Heritage
  • Economic Development
  • Housing
  • Open Spaces
  • Leisure
  • Transport
A good first step would be to take a look at the plan
You can read it in full here:
St Ives Cornwall - Neighbourhood Plan - 2015 - 2030

St Ives TV have produced a film that summarises the content of the plan and both sides of the argument - well worth watching:
Film - St Ives Neighbourhood Plan

There is also a website and Facebook page with more information and news:

St Ives Neighbourhood Plan - Website

St Ives Neighbourhood Plan - Facebook

This will all have a big impact on the way St Ives develops over the next few years - so whatever conclusion you come to - I'd urge everybody to read the plan, attend the open forum and to vote on Thursday 5th May.
