My wife Jo is running another series of Textile Art Workshops and Craft Evenings in St Ives. Great fun- a chance to be creative and learn something new.

The first is Upcycle Your Wardrobe - this Saturday (21st January 2012) from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm - cost is £25.00 for the day. Learn how to transform your old clothes into something new.

St Ives Community Play 2010 - Much Ado About Nothing

St Ives Community Play will be back this summer - with a production of The Merry Wives Of Windsor.

To be staged outdoors on The Island St Ives in August and during the September Festival.

Rough Coast - who are managing the production - want to get as many local people involved as possible.

If you're interested in either performing or helping out backstage - here are some dates for your diary:

Sunday 22nd January - 6.00 pm - The Queens Hotel - Film Show and Information.
Tuesday 31st January - 7.00 pm - The Guildhall - Actors Workshop.
Tuesday 7th February - 7.00 pm - The Guildhall - Actors Workshop.

New Year 2012 - Fireworks - St Ives Cornwall

The New Year in St Ives got off to a wonderful start- with a fantastic firework display on St Ives Harbour.

Organised by St Ives Chamber Of Commerce and funded by donations from local businesses - including a substantial amount from St Ives Harbour Hotel.

The display was intended as a Thank You to the people of St Ives for all the support that they've given to local businesses over the last year.

The Chamber also raised funds for and organised the Christmas trees and lights along Fore Street and through to Tregenna Hill.

I'm a member of the Chamber committee - and can tell you that we've already started planning for next Christmas and New Year - hoping to organise even bigger and better events for the town.

Plus one or two other events during 2012 - more news here in due course.

Run by St Ives Town Council - with the support of St Ives Chamber Of Commerce - this is now the official tourist information website for St Ives.

The new exhibition opened this week at Café Art on Royal Square in St Ives.

The Winter Mixed Show features work by various local artists.

Open every day from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm - until Saturday 28th January 2012.

Myself and Jo very much enjoyed The Big Switch On of St Ives Christmas Lights on Friday.

Music from St Ives Concert Band and Kruners Choir - then the Guildhall was lit up by The Mayor.

We then had a walk along The Harbour, Fore Street and High Street. The lights this year are better than ever.

Tonight at 6.00pm - St Ives Mayor Ron Tulley will switch on the Christmas Lights at The Guildhall. One and all welcome.

Christmas carols and music from Kruners Choir and St Ives Concert Band.

All the lights and Christmas trees are up around town - from St Ives Harbour along Fore Street up to Tregenna Hill. Its looking wonderful !

St Ives and Me draws on her experience of visiting the town from her childhood to the present. Anna is a regular performer at St Ives September Festival and St Ives Literature Festival.

It features interviews with and anecdotes from various people involved in the arts, culture and community here.

This Wednesday (30th November) BishBashBosh Theatre make a welcome return to St Ives.

They will be at St Ives Guildhall with their latest play - Oogly Es Sin - The Lamentable Ballad Of Anthony Payne Cornish Giant.

Last year I saw their previous production in St Ives - Surfing Tommies - and loved it. So this should be well worth seeing.

Local band Bagas Porthia are performing in support - providing music and dance.

In this hilarious and touching new one-man play, BishBashBosh Productions and Dean Nolan are back as Antony Payne, the famous Cornish Giant. By the time, Antony Payne reached his twenty-first birthday he already stood seven foot two inches, and kept on growing! Having both the brains and the brawn, he soon became the bodyguard of the legendary Sir Beville Grenville, yet for all his size and bulk, he was always a gentle giant, nimble and dextrous to the letter. Every day, this Falstaff of the West has to question how it feels to be huge, in a world too set on being small.

Doors open at 6.45 pm and the show starts at 7.00 pm.

Tickets are £7.00 (general), £5.00 (concessions) and £20.00 (family - 2 adults / 2 kids).

St Ives Cornwall - Christmas Lights

The St Ives Christmas Lights are going up around town.

I've spent the last three nights working with a team organised by St Ives Chamber of Commerce and St Ives Town Council - to get Christmas trees and lights installed.

Trees are now up and lit along Fore Street, Market Place and High Street. We ran out of trees part way along Tregenna Place - but more are on their way on Monday. We will then put more up along Tregenna Place and Tregenna Hill.

Lots of hard work was put in by a team of volunteers from the Chamber, various local businesses and St Ives Bay Rotary Club.

Expert help in ladder work and electrics provided by Second To None Roofing and Coast Electrical Services. Transport provided by Mike of The Garrack Hotel.

Elsewhere lots of lights are going up along St Ives Harbour and various local shops / pubs / restaurants thanks to St Ives fishermen Stuart and Tony. If you want more lights for your business give them a call - 07979 573 365.

The Big Switch On for the main town Christmas Tree will be on Friday 2nd December - St Ives Guildhall at 6.00 pm. Christmas carols and music from various local choirs.

Fair Mo - St Ives - Christmas Fair

Fair Mo - St Ives Cornwall

Fair Mo - St Ives' traditional Christmas Fair -is on Saturday 26th November from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.

It has a history going back to 1490 - when it started as a Pig Fair granted by Royal Charter.

This year the organisers are planning a bigger and better event than ever - to be held at St Ives Parish Church (rather than The Guildhall as in previous years).

Stalls will include:

Fresh local produce.
Paintings.
Other works of art.
Crafts.
Antiques.
Christmas gifts.

In keeping with the age old tradition as a pig fair, it will also include a scrumptious pig roast, pigs and other animals on the church green. All will be complemented by stalls selling tasty refreshments.

Chefs from Tregenna Castle will be doing a cooking demonstration and food tasting.

Inside the church will be Santa's grotto, singing and Advent carols.

The Big Draw is a national event held in October each year, aimed at getting the nation drawing! This year Cafe Art are holding a free drawing event - tomorrow:

Wednesday 26th October
10.00 am - 6.30 pm.

On the theme of 'Fantastical Winged Creatures' - drawing real or imagined winged creatures from seagulls to unicorns or completlly invented creatures! We are aiming to turn the space into one wierd aviary -getting the public to draw on tableclothes, windows, paper models etc. Just drop in anytime during the day and take part - free.

St Ives September Festival has got off a great start. I've been out enjoying various events and exhibitions - including Music and Poetry in the Square, St Ives Arts Club Members Exhibition, Bobby Wotnot at Cafe Art and St Ives School Of Painting Exhibition. Plus a few pints at The Sloop and simply walking around the harbour and the beaches.

St Ives September Festival - Poetry and Music in the Square

St Ives September Festival opens on Saturday - I'm really looking forward to it.

On Saturday morning I'll head down to the harbour to see Boats In The Bay.

Then on to Norway Square for Poetry and Music in the Square - and hopefully a chance to meet up with some old friends.

A couple of pints at The Sloop during the late afternoon.

Then in the evening two exhibition opening parties. RoyWalker:Ten at Cafe Art and Members Exhibition at St Ives Arts Club.

Should be a good day. I hope to get some good pictures - and maybe some video - to post here and on FaceBook.

Today sees the opening of a new exhibition in St Ives - at Café Art on Royal Square.

Roy Walker:Ten

A retrospective featuring work from various stages of Roy's career - the first since his death ten years ago.

Roy Walker made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Cornwall and particularly in St Ives where he achieved an impressive reputation as an artist, painter and printmaker. Roy also helped produce prints for many of Cornwall’s leading artists, including Bryan Pearce and John Wells.

Open daily from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm until 30th September 2011. Free entry. There is an opening party on Saturday 10th September at 7.00 pm - all welcome.

St Ives Arts Club - Fundraiser

St Ives Arts Club - Exhibition - Piano

St Ives Arts Club are hosting a special exhibition this week - to raise funds to buy a new piano for the club's theatre.

Members have been asked to donate works on a "Piano" theme.

These will be on display at the club all week - and visitors can place sealed bids as part of a silent auction. The reserve price for each is just £15.00 - so there may be some bargains to be had.

The opening and viewing is tomorrow night (Sunday 4th September) from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm.

After that the exhibition will be open daily from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm - until Friday 9th September.

Winning bids will be announced at the opening party for the Arts Club Members Exhibition - on Saturday 10th September at 8.00 pm.

A chance to support a good local cause and possibly get yourself a great piece of original St Ives art.

St Ives Cornwall - Another Weekend Dawns

The last weekend of the main holiday season is upon us - next week St Ives should get a bit quieter - at least for a few days.

Exhibitions - this weekend is the final chance to see Joie De Vivre - with work by Deryl Petrucci and Archa Robinson - at St Ives Arts Club. Also the last day of Summer Mixed Exhibition at Cafe Art.

Tonight (Friday 2nd September) - St Ives Parish Church are hosting a classical concert. Philharmonic of Cologne Germany - with a programme including Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Mozart. Starts at 7.30 pm.

Also tonight (2nd) the weekly pub quiz at The Halsetown Inn. Test your grey matter plus "Open the Box" with the chance to win a large cash prize. Also great pies and pints - starts at 8.30 pm.

On Saturday night (3rd) The Halsetown Inn are celebrating their first birthday (since re-opening) with live music from The Sea Kings. Overnight camping is available for just £2.00 plus a Special Offer - 50% discount on food that runs all week. Music starts at 8.30 pm - food served from 6.00 pm.

On Sunday (4th) Tregenna Castle have Sunday Lunch and Jazz- traditional roast plus live jazz. Food served from 12.30 pm music until 3.00 pm.

A new exhibition opens on Sunday evening - St Ives Arts Club - Piano - work by members on this theme. Its a fundraiser to raise money for a new piano - a silent auction where visitors can submit sealed bids. The viewing is from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm - all welcome. Open daily until Friday (9th) from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm.

On Sunday night St Ives Kruners present a choral concert at St Ives Parish Church. Starts at 8.00 pm and admission is £5.00.

The Floral Shop - Florist - St Ives Cornwall

The Floral Shop - formerly on Tregenna Hiil - has moved (not closed as some passing the old shop seem to think!).

They are now just around the corner at 5 Gabriel Street - in a bright modern newly refurbished shop.

Still offering a range of flowers, floral gifts and flower arrangements for all occasions. Also fresh fruit and vegetables.

The new shop was officially opened yesterday by Deputy Mayor of St Ives Colin Nicholls.

Godrevy and The Lodge at Balnoon

St Ives Cornwall - View From Godrevy

We had a wonderful day out yesterday - August Bank Holiday is never the best day to be in St Ives - so we headed out across the bay to Godrevy.

Lovely views over the bay - and we got to see St Ives "from the other side".

We took a walk along the coast path - with views of the famous lighthouse. Then headed down to the sands to do some beach-combing.

On the way back we stopped off at the newly refurbished Lodge at Balnoon. The place looks great - really modern and tasteful - but welcoming at the same time. Had a bite to eat and a drink - good food at reasonable prices and friendly people. We'll be back for Sunday lunch or dinner next month.

I'm now really looking forward to September - the crowds will diminish and there's lots to see at St Ives September Festival. One of my favourite months - can't believe its come around again so quickly - is it just me or is time speeding up !

Have just enjoyed a nice day out at Chysauster Ancient Village - out in the Penwith countryside between St Ives and Penzance.

The remains of an Iron Age village - inhabited over 2000 years ago - with the remains of stone-walled homesteads.

Also a beautiful setting with views over the countryside towards Mounts Bay and St Michael's Mount.

On the way back we stopped at Green Pig Farm - a recently opened Tea Room and Gardens on the B3311 road between St Ives and Penzance. Really pleased that we did.

The wonderful Miracle Theatre Company are back in St Ives later this week.

On Sunday (7th August) they're bringing their latest production - The Death Of Sherlock Holmes - to Tregenna Castle for an outdoor performance in the grounds.

It’s a dangerous time for Sherlock Holmes: preparing for his final battle with the criminal mastermind Moriarty, he stumbles on a most ingenious crime. Investigating a trail of rare botanical specimens and paranormal activities, Holmes is led from Baker St, via a suburban séance to the Swiss Alps, where his powers of deduction are stretched to the limit. Discovering his own life is in danger, he is forced to enlist the help of Dr Watson and call on voices from beyond the grave to crack his ultimate case.

Gareth Roberts Quintet - St Ives Jazz Club

Lots to do in St Ives this week as the main holiday season gets into full swing.

John Knill Celebrations

On Monday (25th July 2011) the quinquennial (5 yearly) celebrations for the Knill Ceremony will take place in St Ives.

John Knill was Collector of the Customs at St Ives from 1762 to 1782. He was appointed Mayor of the Borough of St Ives in November 1767 and apparently developed a "warm and abiding affection for the town and its people". Given his job - an affection that was almost certainly not reciprocated by many town traders and residents !

He built a Mausoleum in 1782, up on Worvas Hill above St Ives and close to the present day Steeple Woodland Nature Reserve. Known today as Knill's Steeple. He intended that this imposing 50 ft high structure to be his final resting place. But he died in London in 1811 and his body was never brought back to the town.

He did however prepare an Indenture which dated 29th May 1797. He appointed the Mayor, the Vicar and the Customs Officer to be Trustees and charged them with the duty of ensuring that a ceremony was performed every five years on 25 July, being the Feast of St James The Apostle.

Ten girls, not exceeding 10 years, being native of St Ives and daughters of Seaman, Fishermen or Tinners, should dance around his monument. To be accompanied by two widows aged over 64 years, being widows of Seamen, Fishermen or Tinners. They should be accompanied by the Vicar of St Ives, The Mayor and The Customs Officer. All to be led by a fiddler (the musical type - not a plumber who has failed to declare his VAT).

The ceremony on Monday starts at 10.30 am when the party of children, widows, fiddler and assorted local worthies assembles at The Guildhall. The party will then proceed to the Malakoff - via Street-an-Pol, St Andrew’s Street, High Street, Tregenna Place, Tregenna Hill and Fernlea Terrace. A bus will then take them up to Knill's Steeple. Dancing at the steeple will start at 12.00 noon.

Should be quite a spectacle and another celebration of our local traditions - so well worth a look.

St Ives Artist - Keith English - Florence Biennale

The Arrival Of St Ia - Keith English

St Ives artist Keith English has been invited to exhibit at the prestigious Florence Biennale Exhibition - which will take place from 3rd to December 11th 2011.

Keith will be exhibiting three of his original oil paintings: The Arrival of St. Ia, The Divine Alchemist and The End of Time.

The original artwork can be viewed at Keith's studio throughout the summer until the paintings travel to Italy in October.

Keith welcomes his many friends and clients to his studio to visit him and to see this beautiful work. The studio is on High Street in the Lanhams Building (above St Ives Holidays). Open from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday - but do call ahead to check as these hours sometimes vary - 01736 798 493.

Seagrass Restaurant - to be found down on St Ives Harbour by the slipway - has been voted best restaurant in St Ives (#1 of 64) by independent reviewers on TripAdvisor.

Quite an achievement given that they only opened a few weeks ago in May !

Diners clearly love the place - 95% of those who have posted reviews rate Seagrass as "Excellent".

St Ives Shark

St Ives Shark - Its Out There Somewhere !

I've been bombarded with emails from various shark lovers and self-appointed marine conservation experts - concerned that St Ives is about to launch an armada of shark hunters -out to catch the St Ives Shark. One of them asking me to "call a halt to this shark-hunt !".

The well regarded and authorative national newspaper The Daily Star states that "Fishermen have booked out hotels in the resort, hoping to follow the feat of the hero cop in the first Jaws movie, played by Roy Scheider, 75, and kill it.".

According to The Star there is a £25,000 bounty on the shark's head.

I'd like to assure you that the shark is almost certainly safe and on its way home back to warmer waters.

If it really was out there - and there really was a £25k price on it - I can assure you that by now St Ives fishermen would have it caught and ready for auction on the harbour.

The Queens Hotel on High Street has now fully re-opened - with a brand new bar menu and refurbished bedrooms.

The new menu was described by The West Briton as 'high-end grub in a relaxed, friendly setting'. Chef Matt Perry's is aiming to offer 'Pub food at pub prices' using only the best local ingredient. Everything is freshly cooked and prepared on the premises - included bread baked daily and home-made ice-cream.

A major refurbishment of the five bedrooms is now complete - including handpainted furniture, vintage blankets and mirrors. Cornish art and antiques are part of the decor.There are three doubles and two family rooms - So guests for dinner can now sleep over!

Our new Visitor Information Centre was officially opened this morning - with a ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by Mayor Of St Ives Ron Tulley.

The centre will be open every day offering general information, an accommodation booking service and guidebooks for sale:

10.00 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.
10.00 am to 4.00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Today during the first morning of business around 100 people were visiting every hour.

Local accommodation providers, restaurants and other businesses are asked to support the centre by joining. A range of advertising options are available on a sliding scale of costs. More details are available from:

St Ives Visitor and Information Centre - The Guildhall

St Ives Tourist Information Centre is to re-open on Monday 13th June. Still in its previous premises at The Guildhall but re-named:
St Ives Visitor and Information Centre.

The centre closed last month when Cornwall Council withdrew funding. It will now be run by St Ives Town Council.

The council are asking local businesses to join up and advertise - which will be the main source of funding for the centre from now on. They've published a list of membership rates - on a sliding scale according to the type and size of the business wishing to join. Members will be included in an accommodation guide and on a website.

For visitors the centre will provide general information and an accommodation booking service.

There will be a launch event at The Guildhall next Friday (10th June) at 5.30 pm to which all are invited.

Leach Pottery - St Ives Cornwall

The Leach Pottery in St Ives have launched an appeal - particularly to help the village of Mashiko in northern Japan, which has been badly hit by the recent earthquake.

The pottery has strong links with Japan - stretching back more than a century.

Shoji Hamada, co-founder of the Leach Pottery in St Ives with Bernard Leach, settled in Mashiko with his family when he returned to Japan from St Ives in 1923. He set up his own pottery there and the village today has over 400 pottery studios and kilns.

In 2008 the people of the village collected more than £40,000 towards the rebuilding of Leach Pottery St Ives.

West Somerset Steam Railway - St Ives Trip

West Somerset Steam Railway

A while ago St Ives allowed one of its historic GWR railway station lamps to be removed. It is now fully restored and installed at Stogumber Station, near Taunton on the popular West Somerset Railway Line.

To mark the unveiling of this historic piece of St Ives railway history, a coach has been reserved to travel from St Ives up to Taunton. From there a railway carriage has been reserved - exclusively for St Ives folk at no charge - to travel to Stogumber. A buffet reception has been laid on to welcome the St Ives party.

After the unveiling - and brief speeches by the Mayor of St Ives and WSR Station Master - everyone is invited to join the train to Minehead and to enjoy a full round trip on the railway by steam.

The trip is on Sunday 10th April. The coach will depart St Ives (Royal Square) at 8.00 am, will pick up en-route if needed, and will return around 10.00 pm.

Cost is £13.00 for adults and £10.00 for children under 14.

This trip is expected to be extremely popular so those wishing to travel should reserve a place as sonn as possible.

The aim is to recognise valuable work done for the community.

Nomination forms are available from the council offices at St Ives Guildhall and can also be downloaded from the council website. The closing date is Monday 14th February.

Sunday Walk - Woodland - Tregenna Castle

St Ives Cornwall - Tregenna Castle - Woodland Walk

Just back from a nice winter Sunday morning walk with Jo.

We headed up the hill to Tregenna Castle to enjoy their Woodland Walk. This runs along the edge of the estate and the golf course. Beautiful scenery with views of both St Ives Bay and the countryside.

We then intended to continue continue up the hill to Steeple Woodland and Knills Monument - but ran out of time. This will be the objective of one of our next walks - maybe we'll approach it from the Halsetown side of the hill.

Some people are not aware that the grounds at Tregenna are open to the public - so you can enjoy this walk anytime. You could also follow it with lunch or dinner in The Castle Restaurant or a drink in the bar.

Miracle Theatre present their "panto with a difference" - Beauty and the Beast from Mars - at St Ives Theatre on The Stennack. A new Craft Fair opened in St Ives Library today - featuring hand made work by local craftspeople.

These will run throughout the year - on the first Thursday of every month, starting on 3rd March. Open from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. Thursdays have been chosen as the regular date to coincide with St Ives Farmers Market.

Well worth a trip into town to get some great local food then enjoy browsing some unique and individual hand made work in the library.

I've got several projects under way for clients around St Ives.

Hobblers Restaurant on St Ives Harbour will also have a new improved website online in the next couple of weeks, together with a site for their new self catering cottage on Island Road.

St Ives Secure Parking are adding to their services - as well as secure reserved parking they now also offer a vehicle valet and return journey check. They have also reduced their prices. Coming soon - a new website for their 24 hour car wash in St Ives.

St Ives Cornwall - Tourist Information

A story in The Cornishman this week reports "St Ives Tourist Information Centre Saved By Councillors".

I've heard from two separate and reliable sources that this is somewhat premature and that nothing has been finally settled as yet.

As reported previously - Cornwall Council have withdrawn all funding from the centre from March 2011 - due to a shortage of funds.

A statement from St Ives Town Council today said:
"The town council are working to take positive action with regard to provision of a tourist information service, but this is subject to further negotiation."

A working group has been set up including representatives of St Ives Town Council, Chamber of Commerce and Hotel & Guesthouse Association. They've been working hard for the last few weeks to resolve the situation and come up with a solution - despite many stumbling blocks.

More definite news is expected soon.

Also - good to see that, despite the cutbacks, Cornwall Council still has enough of our money to fund vital front line services - such as a Business Change Manager (salary up to £51k) to "deliver a programme of change that will promote a performance led culture ...... a chance to play a leading role in the transformation of our services as we seek to develop opportunities for the delivery of our services to public bodies across the South West"

So we can look forward to further service enhancements from the Most Improved Council of The Year - things can only get better.

Miracle are no strangers to St Ives - their previous productions here, including Romeo & Juliet and The Revenge Of Rumpelstiltskin, have received rave reviews.

This show is not to be missed. Huge fun and suitable for all ages.
I saw it in December in Truro and I'm really looking forward to seeing it again.

Textile Art and Knitting

Creative Textile Course - St Ives Cornwall

Do you have an interest in textiles and want to learn some new skills ?

My wife Jo will be starting a Creative Textile Course - this Friday (14th) at St Ives Library and then running over the next 10 weeks. Each session runs from 10.00 - 13.00 and the cost is £10.00 per session, with a £20.00 deposit to cover the first two sessions.

The course covers a wide variety of techniques including Feltmaking, Weaving, Hand Embroidery, Machine Embroidery, Fabric Dyeing, Fabric Printing and lots more .....

Jo is also running craft evenings at Café Art on Royal Square. Next Monday (17th) is a Knitting and Crochet Evening - for both beginners to get started and more experienced knitters who would like to learn more. It runs from 19.00 - 21.00 and costs £5.00 per person - call in at the Café to book a place. Should be both great fun and sociable - a chance to learn new techniques and meet fellow knitters. As an added bonus the Café will be open and serving their delicious range of home made cakes, snacks and drinks.

Walk On Trencrom Hill

A beautiful sunny day in St Ives and West Cornwall.

We've just been for a walk on Trencrom Hill - just outside St Ives.

The photo gallery above follows our route - from the car park, up to the summit, down the other side of the hill then along the woodland margin back to the start.

The views from the top are stunning - unique because you can see both the North and South Cornwall coasts. Views across to St Michael's Mount, Hayle Estuary, St Ives Bay and Godrevy.

One of my plans for 2011 is to get out walking more - so I hope to post more walks including Rosewall Hill, Lanyon Quoit and Mên-an-Tol.

I was recently commissioned by St Ives Arts Club to redesign their website - with a brief to add more useful content and produce a fresh modern design to better reflect the club.

Working closely with the committee and other club members - I've produced something that I have to admit I'm pretty pleased with:

The new What's On page is now has more information about future events - including both exhibitions and performance. This will be kept as up-to-date as possible as the calendar evolves. Although some events are members only most are open to all. If you're not a regular visitor to the club you might be surprised to see just how much there is on through the year:

There is also a separate section for the World Classics Series which brings top class musicians to the club from around the world. Three new concerts have been scheduled for 2011 - tickets on sale now - with more to follow:

The History of the Club has been re-written for the site by Marion Whybrow and Archa Robinson - taking the story from 1890 to the present day. We've included some wonderful old photographs and hope to add more, including some from the extensive collection at St Ives Archive Centre:

Focus - surely not the legendary Dutch prog rockers ?

Joey the Lips look like a great choice to headline the festival closing night - Soul, Blues, Funk with a bit of Motown and Rock according to their website.

Christmas - St Ives Cornwall

St Ives Cornwall Blog is now two years old - actually slightly older as I did my first post on the Winter Solstice in 2008.

Many thanks to all of my readers and followers - I plan to improve my rate of posting over the coming year, as I've had one or two gaps over the last 12 months, mainly due to pressure of work on other websites. As ever any suggestions or feedback for this blog are more than welcome.

All is looking good for Christmas - we've got pretty much all of our shopping done - tomorrow just need to walk down to Tregenna get the turkey from Harveys and vegetables from Trims. In case of any last minute needs the Co-Op is open until 8.00 on Christmas Eve.

Jo is finishing off the Christmas cakes and about to start on the mince pies. Both of our girls are home for the weekend. Even the weather forecast is looking good - so we'll be out for our traditional walk on Christmas day, followed by a drink at The Sloop and home for Christmas dinner.

Travel To St Ives Cornwall

I'm told by one of the main self catering agencies in town that today and tomorrow are the main "changeover" days for Christmas visitors.

So I thought I'd do a post about travel conditions - as the news has been full of horror stories.

First - we have no snow whatsoever in St Ives and the surrounding area - so whatever you encounter further upcountry once you get here there will be no problems.

I've set up a Twitter feed for travel conditions - including posts from BBC News, Pirate FM and The Met Office - no problems reported at the moment:

According to other posts on Twitter conditions on the A30 are fine at the moment.

According to the National Rail website trains into St Erth and Penzance are running on time or with minor delays.

Newquay Airport report that flights coming in from London, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester are scheduled on time. Some delays are reported on flights from Newcastle. The airport is currently fully operational, but they do advise passengers to contact their airline before travelling to their departure airport.

I've been working on quite a few new websites and website updates for St Ives businesses over the last few weeks, so I thought that I'd highlight some of them.

I've also been setting up Google Places pages for several of them - these appear both on normal Google searches and on map searches. With more and more people using Google Maps, particularly on mobile phones, this is a useful way to get your business noticed.

Exhibition - 12 Artists - Café Art

Just a week to go to Christmas - can't wait !

There is a lot going on in town as the holiday approaches - so here is a selection of events.

Tomorrow - Saturday 18th - there is music and performance throughout the day all around town - as part Sounds Of Christmas.

Then tomorrow night - live music at St Ives Arts Club with Keith Hills and Richard Plank - a journey through the Folk-Blues section of The Great American Songbook. Doors open at 7.30 pm music from 8.00 pm. On the door - £6.00. Bring your own drinks.

On Sunday (19th) evening The Castle Inn are holding their Christmas Draw. Top prize is a Sony 120GB Hard Disk Drive DVD Recorder + Freeview - plus lots of other great prizes. Followed by live music from the legendary Billy Mac. Draw at 5.00 pm then music from 6.00 pm. Draw tickets are still available - £1.00 each.

Café Art - at The Drill Hall on Royal Square - have a new exhibition starting this week - 12 Artists. There is an opening party on Sunday (19th) from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Open on Monday (20th) from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm then every day until Saturday 15th January.

On Tuesday (21st) St Ives Jazz Club are holding a Christmas Party Gala Night. Musicians galore, guests, surprises, buffet. Doors open at 8.00 pm and music from 9.00 pm. Entry on the door: £10.00 / £6.00 (members).

On Wednesday (22nd) Jo McIntosh is running a children's art workshop at St Ives Library - Mini Christmas Stockings. Runs from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. It costs £2.00 per child and advance booking is recommended as places are limited - call in at the library or call them on 0300 1234 111.

On Thursday (23rd) its your last chance to get some great local Christmas food from St Ives Farmers Market. Festive specials from local suppliers include - three / five bird roasts, pork, venison, beef, seasonal vegetables, mince pies and christmas cakes.

This Saturday Sounds of Christmas comes to St Ives - a day of music and performance all around town. Pantomime fun, choirs and other music.

Santa will be in his grotto at The Glass Tree on Fore Street from 2..00 to 4.00. Also at the same times on Sunday (19th) and Thursday (23rd).

Harvey Brothers Family Butchers, on Tregenna Place, have some great choices for Christmas dinner - including traditional turkey plus turkey crown, goose, duck and free range chicken. A new exhibition opens this Sunday (19th December) at Café Art in The Drill Hall on Royal Square.

The opening party is from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm with drinks and nibbles.

The café and exhibition are then open daily from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.

The exhibition closes on Saturday 15th January.

It features small works in a variety of media including paintings, drawings, photographs, textiles and installation.

All work is for sale - with a range of prices to suit everybody - from £8.00 to £250.00 - a great chance to get a unique Christmas gift or something beautiful for your home.

Christmas Shopping and Celebrations

Santa and Christmas Fairy

There are a couple of special events coming up in St Ives as Christmas approaches.

This Friday (10th) its Jingle All The Way. Santa and his sleigh will be travelling through town from The Parish Rooms on St Andrews Street and along Fore Street. He'll have lots of reindeer helpers to pull his sleigh and children are welcome to join in - bring reindeer horns and jingle bells if you have them! Starts at 6.00 pm.

Also on Friday many shops will be opening late, some serving mulled wine, mince pies or other festive treats. As well as Fore Street and elsewhere don't forget that The Drill Hall on Royal Square will be open. Cafe Art will be serving a wonderful range of snacks and hot drinks, with the shops offering a great range of gifts.

On Saturday 18th December its Sounds of Christmas. Music, choirs and performers throughout the town during the day to entertain, bring good cheer and a warm Christmas atmosphere.

Digey Food Room - Tasting Day

There are two events this weekend in St Ives that are worth checking out if you're looking for some great Christmas food.

Fair Mo at The Guildhall features "everything you need for Christmas under one roof." Festive food, drink and gifts. It is open from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, a fundraiser for St Ives Parish Church.

The Digey Food Room are hosting their fifth annual Tasting Day. Tables will be filled with samples of the huge range of exciting things the shop has to offer. Anyone not sure which of the dozen or more olive oils and balsamic vinegars is the one for them will have a chance to taste the difference. Or they can compare different chorizo and salami or try a range of Spanish chocolate or Italian biscuits and panettone.

There is also a great selection of Cornish produce - don't miss the cheeses from Sue Proudfoot of Whalesborough Farm or the range of preserves from Crellow, the smoked meats from Tregidda or the mulled cider and apple juice from Cornish Orchards.

The tasting runs from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm - and in case you didn't know they are (not surprisingly) located on The Digey just off Fore Street.

Barnoon Car Park - St Ives Cornwall

Cornwall Council recently put forward proposals for ~~increases~~ "consistency" in car parking charges across the county.

It looks like one end result may be huge increases in parking charges for St Ives residents over the next two years.

The council are running a consultation which gives a right to respond, but responses must be submitted by 3rd December. Response forms are available from the St Ives Town Council office at The Guildhall. You can download a printable a copy from my St Ives Website. You can also respond online using the consultation link above.

An action group has been set up to co-ordinate local concerns. They will be holding a public meeting tomorrow evening (25th November) at The Western Hotel, starting at 6.00 pm, all welcome.

Affordable Art Fair - ShelterBox Fundraiser

Next weekend - Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November there will be an Affordable Art Fair at St Ives Guildhall.

Open Saturday 10.00 am - 9.00 pm. Sunday 10.00 am - 4.00 pm.

Work by local artists will be on sale - all priced at under £500 - some a lot less.

Live music on Saturday night, refreshments and a prize draw.

This is a fundraiser for the excellent local charity ShelterBox.
Table fees and a proportion of sales by artists will be donated.

Entry is free but donations from visitors would be appreciated.

St Ives Garden Competition - Best Vegetable Garden

I was at St Ives Guildhall last night for the presentation of trophies to winners of the various categories.

A nice evening which featured a slideshow presentation of St Ives gardens.

I received a cup for Best Vegetable Garden from the Mayor - Yvonne Watson - who then presented the other awards. I'll definitely be entering the competition again next year.

Finally we all tucked in to an excellent buffet with wine and soft drinks.

Many thanks to all at St Ives Town Council who organised the evening.

I'll also be participating in Secret Gardens Of St Ives again next year.

I've already started planting - Broad Bean seeds went in last weekend, ready for an early crop in the Spring.

I've harvested the last of the cucumbers - now on sale in Trims Greengrocers on Tregenna Place St Ives if you want some. They also have some of my Jerusalem Artichokes - plenty of those still in the ground so more to come.
